Sea water to put out a fire

QUESTION
Is it possible to use sea water as a fluid to extinguish a fire?

ANSWER
UNI EN 12845 8.1.2 allows the use of salt water or brackish water.

The standard sets limits on the use of brackish water and clearly indicates that the fire-fighting network must be fed exclusively with fresh water.
This means that during the design phase of the water supply, the following must be provided:

  • An auxiliary fresh water storage system, within which to suck and recirculate the flow rate during the tests

  • A fresh water washing system, which provides for the possibility of completely eliminating, from all pipes (suction and delivery network) and pumps, any brackish water that may have been conveyed

Without these elements, the power supply and the water network would risk serious damage, due to deposits and corrosion.
