Use of a river as a water storage
QUESTION
If a river is used as a water storage, is it possible to mount the suction pipes of the pumps directly in the river bed?
ANSWER
The use of a river as a water supply is provided by UNI EN 12845 in point 3.33
Note, however, that in point 8.1.2 of the same UNI EN 12845, it is required that:
- the water must not contain fibrous substance or other suspended material that may cause deposits inside the pipes of the system
The water of a river normally has a great amount of solid transport that could interfere with or damage the fire thrust groups. Thus, in point 9.4, UNI EN 12845 again provides for the need, for INEXHAUSTIBLE FEEDS, for the interposition between the riverbed and the pumps, for a withdrawal operation that includes a sedimentation and an aspiration area.
